Easter Sunday: The Resurrection

the-risen-lord-appears.jpg

For the entire Christian world Easter Sunday marks a defining moment in the Jesus story. Over the last several weeks leading up to Easter I've heard various comments about what this day actually symbolizes for the Christian faith. To some it's the promise of hope that someday we will also be resurrected from our own death. To others it's the realization that we've already been resurrected from death. To many it's the proof that Jesus was in fact God in the flesh risen to show His power over death.

While each of those finds it's appropriate place in the Jesus story, I find myself searching for a different response these days. When it comes to the significance of the resurrection of Jesus, I find myself asking, "What does the resurrection have to say about life among the dying?"

While I'm certain that I will continue to explore that question until my own death, there are those who have come before me who have already articulated a response to my query. So I'll leave you with a quote that on this Easter Sunday reflects the perspective from which I choose to view the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

He [God] raised Jesus, not as an invitation to us to come to heaven when we die, but as a declaration that He Himself has now established permanent residence on earth… The good news of the resurrection is not that we shall die and go home with him, but that he has risen and comes home with us, bringing all his hungry, naked, thirsty, sick, prisoner brothers with him.                     - Clarence Jordan

sam i love that you are not afraid of friday & saturday living, that you don't try to avoid it. i am glad there's sunday, too, don't get me wrong, but i think many have this weird idea that it's supposed to be sunday every day, all day. those of us in the trenches know that isn't even close to reality. but what i love about this quote is that it reminds us that Jesus' sunday resurrection slices through friday and saturday here and there..He comes down instead of demanding we need to go up.
